Net greenlit production on Friday for another cycle of the surprise summer hit, which revolves around Blighty chef Gordon Ramsay. Granada America and A. Smith & Co. will return as producers.
Despite low expectations, "Hell's Kitchen" regularly won its 9 p.m. Monday timeslot in adults 18-49. Last week's finale is expected to rank as the No. 1 show of the frame in that demo -- a big accomplishment in a summer that's seen just one other new reality skein, "Dancing With the Stars," emerge as a breakout hit.
Fox reality guru Mike Darnell admitted he was surprised by the show's success. "I always loved Gordon as a commodity, but a lot of these 'Apprentice'-like shows have failed, except for 'Hell's Kitchen,' " Darnell said.
In addition to the work of exec producers Paul Jackson, Arthur Smith and Kent Weed, Darnell said it was Ramsay's acerbic style that made the difference. "He's really in his element (on the show). He's a very dynamic personality," he said.
No word yet on changes for season two, though Darnell did promise "there will be some twists and turns."
