Oscar noms delayed a week

Academy Awards to delay announcement until Jan. 31

With the 78th Oscars pushed back a week for the Winter Olympics, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences said Tuesday that it is also delaying its nominations announcement one week to Jan. 31.

Date change keeps roughly the same five-week window between nominations and the kudofest, which will be held March 5.

Oscar-nommed pics earn the bulk of their B.O. coin in the weeks after the nominations, so some studios were hoping the Acad would keep an earlier nomination date -- closer to last year's Jan. 25 -- thus adding an extra week to tout the noms to the public.

On the other hand, the later noms give Academy members six more days to see films -- particularly year-end openers -- before turning in their ballot.

Other key dates:

Dec. 29: Nominations ballots mailed.

Jan. 21: Nominations polls close at 5 p.m. PT.

Jan. 31: Noms announced at 5:30 a.m. PT at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Feb. 8: Final ballots mailed.

Feb. 13: Nominees luncheon at the Beverly Hilton.

Feb. 18: Scientific & Technical Awards dinner.

Feb. 28: Final polls close at 5 p.m. PT.

March 5: Academy Awards presented at the Kodak Theater.
