NBC to reap midseason 'Windfall'

Fox passes, but Perry drama hits the jackpot

NBC has added another drama to its midseason hopper, picking up the lotto-themed skein "Windfall."

Exec produced by Laurie McCarthy ("Felicity"), the Regency TV drama revolves around a group of 19 young adults who win a $386 million lottery jackpot -- and find the prize isn't all it's cracked up to be.

"Windfall" was originally created for Fox by McCarthy and Gwendolyn Parker; Parker is no longer involved in the series. Fox ultimately passed on the show, opening the door for NBC to take a look at the project (Daily Variety, June 29).

The original pilot cast will return, including Luke Perry, Jason Gedrick, Lana Parrilla, Sarah Wynter, D.J. Cotrona, Jon Foster, Alice Greczyn and Jaclyn DeSantis.

NBC Entertainment prexy Kevin Reilly said he was drawn to the show's "dueling themes of dreams coming true and 'be careful what you wish for.' "

"We feel like we found a diamond-in-the-rough when this pilot became available," Reilly said.

NBC had to wait while Fox signed off on letting the project move elsewhere but was able to formally announce the "Windfall" order on Wednesday.

"Windfall" has been "one of Regency TV's passion projects, and we're so glad the show has found a home," said Regency TV president Robin Schwartz.

McCarthy's credits also include "The Handler," "CSI: Miami" and "Cover Me."

"Windfall" joins drama "Book of Daniel" and laffers "Thick and Thin" and "Four Kings" on the Peacock midseason bench. NBC also has several more pilots still in the mix for the second half of the season.
