Bourne cuts ribbon on 'Scissorhands'
International tour expected following London run
Director-choreographer Matthew Bourne's dance musical version of the Tim Burton film will start an 11-week run with previews on Nov. 22 at Sadler's Wells, Bourne's new London base. It will open Nov. 30.
A national and international tour is then expected for the venture, to be produced by Bourne's New Adventures company, Martin McCallum and Marc Platt. Los Angeles, where Platt lives, is expected to be on the U.S. itinerary for the show, which will see the 23-year-old British dancers Sam Archer and Richard Winsor alternating as the gentle misfit Edward Scissorhands (played onscreen by Johnny Depp).
Original score is by Terry Davies, who also will be adapting some of composer Danny Elfman's musical themes from the film.
Project was first announced more than five years ago by Bourne and Katharine Dore, his then business partner in Adventures in Motion Pictures. Latest vision of the piece for Bourne's subsequent New Adventures company is apparently even more dance-intensive, as befits the Tony-winning creator of "Swan Lake," "The Car Man" and "Play Without Words."
Bourne is currently repped in London as co-director and co-choreographer of "Mary Poppins." He has been in discussions with two-time Tony-winning helmer Joe Mantello about collaborating on a revival of "Pal Joey."
