Filmmaker Robert Achs died June 21 of cancer in New York. He was 54.

Over his 20-year career, he was cinematographer on numerous documentaries including the award-winning "Taxi Cab Confessions" for HBO and "Mya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision." Achs also was a bluegrass musician, avid sailor, inventor, writer and long-distance runner.

Brooklyn native is survived by his wife, Jackie Leopold, a former producer for WNET; a daughter; his father; a sister, writer Naomi Foner-Gyllenhaal; her husband, director Stephen Gyllenhaal; and his niece and nephew, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal.
