George Lucas, along with a who's who of guests, celebrates the opening of his new Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco on Saturday.

George Lucas, joined by 2,000 guests, including California's two U.S. senators, opened his company's new Letterman Digital Arts Center on Saturday with a bash that included entertainment by Chris Isaak, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs and the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart.

The facility is located in San Francisco's Presidio, a former military base that is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

"I see it as an opportunity to save the park," Lucas said. "I love the park. I did not want to see it turned into a shopping mall."

The 23-acre Letterman complex -- complete with a stone Yoda fountain and other reminders of the filmmaker's "Star Wars" franchise -- will house several Lucasfilm divisions. The company will continue to maintain Big Ranch, Skywalker Ranch and other Marin properties.
