Studio launches pic slate for PlayStation Portable

LONDON -- Universal Pictures Intl. has announced its first slate of films to be released for the Sony PlayStation Portable videogame system.

On Sept. 1, the day the Sony PSP goes on sale in Europe, UPI will release widescreen versions of "Van Helsing," "8 Mile," "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Mummy Returns" in the Universal Media Disk format.

It will also release "Kill Bill Vol. 1" and "Brotherhood" in Japan only.

UPI also has announced two more waves of UMD releases. "The Fast and the Furious," "The Bourne Identity," "The Chronicles of Riddick" (excluding Japan, Germany and Korea) and "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" (Japan only) are due out Oct. 3.

Then on Oct. 24, it will follow with "2 Fast 2 Furious," "The Mummy," "Hulk," "Kill Bill Vol. 2" (Japan only), a new standup vid by Brit comic Peter Kay (U.K. only) and "Dubosc -- Romantique" (France only).
