Producers Howard and Karen Baldwin have acquired life story rights from Dangerfield's widow and plan to develop and produce a biopic through their Baldwin Entertainment Group. The film will be based at least in part on "It's Not Easy Bein' Me," Dangerfield's 2004 autobiography.
"Rodney Dangerfield was a comedic genius -- and the true stories behind his jokes are fascinating," said Karen Baldwin.
"Rodney took the indignities of everyday life and spun them into golden one-liners that endeared him to millions around the world," Joan Dangerfield said. "But while he was making everyone forget their troubles by laughing at his, Rodney's own life was a heavy-hearted one."
The Baldwins were producers on "Ray" and "Sahara" and recently announced plans to partner with Robert Redford's Wildwood Enterprises on a Jackie Robinson/Branch Rickey biopic, with Redford portraying Rickey. The couple has joined with "Ray" producer Stuart Benjamin to bring a Ray Charles stage project to Broadway.
The Baldwins are also producing an adaptation of "The Legacy of Luna," based on Julia Butterfly Hill's bestseller about living for two years in a redwood to prevent a lumber company from cutting the tree. David S. Ward is scripting and the Baldwins are partnered with Andrew Cohen, Jeff Skoll's Participant Prods. and Ed Saxon on the project.
