SBT has carried the comedy skein about a homeless boy in Mexico City for 21 years and intended to replace it with telenovela "Rebelde," a Mexican remake of Argentina's "Rebel Way."
Now it has postponed "Rebelde" indefinitely.
Reruns of "El chavo del ocho" pulled in among the net's highest ratings in its Monday-Saturday 6 p.m. slot.
Hundreds of fans are due to attend a meeting July in Rio-based Uerj U. to protest SBT's threat to scrap the show and to watch episodes and a lecture from Carlos Seidl, one of the local voices of the dubbed series.
