Winners the past three years had received a plaque, not a trophy. New move reps an effort by ATAS to recognize the growth of interactive media as a force in television programming.
Nod recognizes original interactive TV programming content, applications or services. Last year's honorees were DirecTV's "NFL Sunday Ticket," ABC's "Celebrity Mole" and Showtime's Virtual Channel.
Winners are determined by the Academy's interactive media peer group, formed in 2000. To qualify this year, entries must have aired between June 1, 2004, and May 31 -- which is also the entry deadline. Go to Emmys.tv/interactive for an application.
Members of the peer group will view qualified entries at home and then vote online to narrow the balloting. Final decisions will be made by a blue-ribbon panel.
