Mini-major has just inked a development deal for a feature based on the life of Danny Basavich (aka "Kid Delicious"), currently the No. 1-ranked pool player in the nation.
Pact includes rights to Sports Illustrated article "The Amazing Adventures of Kid Delicious and Bristol Bob," written by L. Jon Wertheim.
In addition, Lions Gate has reached a life rights and consulting agreement with Basavich and his onetime partner, "Bristol" Bob Begey.
Treatment and first draft screenplay will be written by Wertheim, who's also writing a book on Kid Delicious to be published by Houghton Mifflin.
Book and the planned pic will follow Basavich's transformation from a creative and successful pool hustler to the top-ranked professional billiards player in the country.
Lions Gate prexy of acquisitions and co-productions Peter Block and Michael Paseornek, prexy of production and development, are overseeing the project.
