Searchlight's loading 'Gun' with helmer pair

Sundance duo raise 'Son' for Fox

Fox Searchlight has hired writer-directors Alex and Andrew Smith -- who made 2002 Sundance pic "The Slaughter Rule" -- to adapt and helm the graphic novel "Son of the Gun."

Book was written by Chilean-born author and underground fillmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky ("El Topo," "Santa Sangre"), who went on to create cult graphic novels including "The Incal."

Set in the criminal underworld of 1970s Mexico City, story is a modern retelling of "Oedipus Rex," but one in which the protag has a tail and carries a six-shooter.

Dooma Wendschuh and Corey May are producing the pic via their SekretAgent Prods. banner along with Fabrice Giger.

Searchlight exec VP of production Claudia Lewis and creative exec Charlotte Koh are overseeing the project.
