Golden Scene adds pics to mix
Co. responds to Korean mania, aims to pickup similar titles at fest
In Cannes, Golden Scene is repping helmer Stanley Kwan's "Everlasting Regret." Pic, based on the Chinese novel by the same title, is about a beauty queen's life in Shanghai from the 1930s to the '80s. Footage from the film, which is still being shot in Shanghai with a $5 million budget, will be shown during the market, says managing director Winnie Tsang. The Hong Kong-China co-production stars Sammi Cheng, Tony Leung Ka Fai and Daniel Wu.
Golden Scene is also responding to the recent Korean mania in Hong Kong spurred by the popularity of Korean soap opera "Jewell in the Palace." Tsang says she will concentrate on picking up more Korean titles during the fest.
Already on the sked are Korean pics "Marathon," helmed by Chung Yoon-chui and "April Snow," a drama directed by Hur Jin-ho.
This week, Golden Scene opens Jet Li and Morgan Freeman starrer "Danny the Dog," about a slave who is used as a fighting machine by his master.
International pics on the distrib's slate include "Sin City" June 2 and "Brothers Grimm" Aug. 4, followed by fantasy-adventure pic "Five Children and It" and Roman Polanski's "Oliver Twist" in November.
