"Land of the Lost" ran from 1973-1977 and revolved around a forest ranger named Rick Marshall, who with his two children got sucked into a time vortex during a rafting trip and ended up in a strange world populated by dinosaurs and other dangerous creatures. The kids won't be part of the movie.
The original series gets a DVD release this week.
Film will be written by Chris Henchy and Dennis McNicholas. Sid and Marty Krofft will produce with Mosaic Media Group's Jimmy Miller and Julie Wixon-Darmody.
Pic is the first significant deal made by U's Donna Langley since she was elevated to president of production.
Ferrell, who is currently filming the feature transformation of the Broadway musical "The Producers," due out domestically via Universal on Dec. 21, opens May 13 in the U comedy "Kicking and Screaming," followed by "Bewitched" at Columbia. Also, he and McKay are writing "Talladega Nights" together for McKay to direct.
Henchy has written for such TV series as "Entourage," while McNicholas is a former head writer of "Saturday Night Live" who's currently writing "The Party" for Jay Roach to direct.
