Juries set for Cannes stand

Woo, Varda, Hayek on fest jury

PARIS -- Three days after unveiling this year's Official Selection, the Cannes Film Festival on Friday named the juries of the competition and other fest sections.

Joining previously announced president Emir Kusturica on the main jury are helmers John Woo, Agnes Varda, Benoit Jacquot and Fatih Akin, thesps Javier Bardem, Salma Hayek and Nandita Das and writer Toni Morrison.

Akin's officially selected "Crossing the Bridge" will receive a special out-of-competition screening.

As announced earlier, "Sideways" helmer Alexander Payne will preside over the jury of the Un Certain Regard section. Other jury members are actress Betsy Blair, Rotterdam Film Festival director Sandra Den Hamer, director-scribe Gilles Marchand, Argentine critic Eduardo Antin and journalists Katia Chapoutier and Genevieve Welcomme.

Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami will preside over the jury that awards the Camera d'Or for best first film. The predominantly French panel includes writer Patrick Chamoiseau, director Malik Chibane, cinematographer Romain Winding, technician Luc Pourrinet, critic Yves Allion and cinephile Laura Meyer, plus Variety critic Scott Foundas and Turin Film Festival director Roberto Turigliatto.

The Cinefondation and short films jury is headed by director Edward Yang and includes directors Chantal Akerman and Yousry Nasrallah, actress Sylvie Testud and critic Colin MacCabe.

The festival runs May 11-22.
