Tobey's good to go for WB

Maguire set to speak 'German'

In what will be his first starring role since "Spider-Man 2," Tobey Maguire has signed to star with George Clooney and Cate Blanchett in "The Good German," the Steven Soderbergh-directed adaptation of the Joseph Kanon novel for Warner Bros.

Drama follows an American journalist (to be played by Clooney) drawn into a murder mystery in post-war Berlin, where he's searching for his wartime mistress (Blanchett). Paul Attanasio wrote the script.

Maguire will play a seemingly innocent soldier who drives the journo around town and has motives of his own.

Section Eight partners Clooney and Soderbergh are producing.

"The Good German" will be shot in black-and-white on WB's soundstages. Production begins in the fall.

Maguire has made a deal with Sony to produce and star in the Ed Solomon-scripted adaptation of "Tokyo Suckerpunch." He will reprise his role as the webslinger in the third installment of "Spider-Man," slated for summer 2007.
