CBS and MarketWatch were partners in CBSMarketwatch.com until Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones & Co. acquired the financial news site in January for $519 million.
CBS had been a bidder for the company but pulled out when the stakes got too high. Instead, CBS forged a deal with Kramer, who had planned to leave Dow Jones at the end of March.
"I needed a guru for our digital initiatives," CBS prexy Leslie Moonves said. "We have to maximize the revenue we get from sources other than television or radio advertising."
Kramer will oversee CBS SportsLine, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; CBS.com; CBSNews.com; and UPN.com, as well as the sales operations that serve them.
Kramer will also consult at Infinity Broadcasting, a role that may increase as the unit develops its Internet radio business.
