MEXICO CITY -- Helmer Fernando Eimbcke's "Temporada de patos" (Duck Season) all but swept the Mexican Ariel awards Tuesday night, taking 11 laurels out of 12 noms, including picture, director and first work. It's the first time a single film has won all three top prizes.
"Patos," filmed in black and white, also won actor (Enrique Arreola), actress (Danny Perea), original screenplay (Eimbcke), cinematography, editing, sound, music and art design.
The big night wraps up a year of kudos for the pic that kicked off a year ago with top honors at the Guadalajara Festival before waddling through fests and prize ceremonies from AFI to Thessaloniki.
The other big hopeful, Luis Mandoki's "Voces inocentes," largely disappointed. Pic, which marked the return to Spanish-language film for the helmer after years in Hollywood, cleaned up at the Mexican box office, but picked up only three Ariels, for supporting actress (Ofelia Median), special effects and makeup.
"The most important thing is the opinion of the public," Mandoki told the press.
No other film won more than two awards, and some categories, such as adapted screenplay, won by "Huapango," had only one film competing.
Night was marred by violence outside Mexico City's Palace of Fine Arts, where the ceremony was held, provoked in part by the lack of a formal red carpet.
Press and fans mobbed attendees and tensions flared. Several firecrackers exploded and police arrested six people.
Later, police prevented many from leaving the event for security reasons.
