Schwartz's 'Captain' takes off in May

Family musical to bow at Gotham's York Theater

"Wicked" composer Stephen Schwartz will premiere his latest work, family tuner "Captain Louie," May 4-June 12 at Gotham's York Theater Company; opening night is May 8.

Show is produced by the York in association with Meridee Stein, who'll direct; Pam Koslow; and Kurt Peterson.

With a book by Anthony Stein, based on Ezra Jack Keats' picture book "The Trip," "Captain Louie" is about a lonely boy who leaves his new neighborhood on Halloween to visit his old friends, traveling on the wings of his favorite toy, a little red plane.

Schwartz's Broadway credits include music and lyrics for "Pippin" and "Godspell." His film credits include Oscar wins for Disney toon features "Pocahontas" and "The Prince of Egypt."

"Captain Louie" has choreography by Joshua Bergasse and music direction by Edward Barnes. Sets are designed by Jeff Subik; lighting is by Annmarie Duggan; costumes are by Elizabeth Flauto.

The York Theater, dedicated to producing new musicals, recently produced "The Musical of Musicals: The Musical," and Broadway hit "Avenue Q" got its start in the York's developmental reading series.

It will present "Captain Louie" at St. Peter's in the Citigroup Center, 619 Lexington Ave.

PS Classics will release the show's soundtrack in early May.
