New Line has bought film rights to the upcoming book "Killing Yourself to Live: 85% a True Story," by Spin magazine senior editor Chuck Klosterman, and set it up with Karz Entertainment.
Book, to be published by Simon & Schuster in July, centers on the author's struggle through an early midlife crisis while on assignment for Spin to visit sites where famous musicians met untimely deaths. Tour serves as a backdrop to Klosterman's reflection on problems that plague his daily existence, particularly the conflict with three women in his life.
Klosterman also wrote "Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota" and "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto."
New Line-based Mike Karz will produce, with Russell Hollander, the shingle's senior VP of production, exec producing. New Line execs Swanna MacNair and Meredith Finn will oversee for the mini-major.
Hollander brought the project into the shingle prior to the auction, conducted by Gersh.
Karz's producing credits include "First Daughter" for Fox/Regency and "Malibu's Most Wanted" for Warner Bros. He's producing "Honeymoon With Harry" for New Line, with "Million Dollar Baby" scribe Paul Haggis attached to write and direct.
