Tyros find slot on C4's FourDocs
Channel to focus on docu advice, share views on filmmaking
FourDocs, planned to bow later this year, will give less-experienced helmers the chance to get practical advice about creating documentaries and to share views on the art of filmmaking.
"Channel 4 has a reputation as a pioneer of documentary filmmaking with programs such as Nick Broomfield's 'The Leader, His Driver and the Driver's Wife' and Errol Morris' 'The Thin Blue Line' creating defining moments in the history of the genre," C4 CEO Andy Duncan says.
"As we increasingly adapt to a multimedia world, we needed to find ways of supporting and encouraging the development of documentaries."
Duncan believes a broadband channel combining the latest technologies with creative and experienced industryites is an innovative way to support docs.
As well as hosting services for rookie filmmakers, the channel will feature archives of docus, interviews with documakers and a clips library containing downloadable, copyright-cleared shots to help filmmakers flesh out sequences for their movies.
FourDocs will also encourage filmmakers to upload their own four-minute docs on any subject. Docs can then be viewed and discussed by other users of the site.
C4 says this format will present a creative challenge for new and experienced documentary filmmakers.
The idea for FourDocs was developed by documentary maker Patrick Uden of Uden-Media, and interactive specialist Anthony Lilley, managing director of MLP.
