WB seizes Kenner's 'Demon'

Upcoming novel to hit the big screen

Warner Bros. Pictures has optioned Julie Kenner's upcoming novel, "Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom," for Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan's 1492 Pictures, and hired Kevin and Dan Hageman to adapt the screenplay.

"Carpe Demon" is the tale of a stay-at-home mother who is charged with cleaning up her demon-ridden small town. Novel is skedded for publication July 5 as a Berkley trade paperback.

1492 senior VP Jennifer Blum brought the scribes into the company. Pic's development is overseen by Warners execs Jeff Clifford and Geoff Shaevitz.

The Hagemans wrote "The Nightmare of Hugo Bearing," which was purchased by Sony for Phoenix Pictures, and they were hired by Steven Spielberg to write his original idea, "Charlie Dills," for DreamWorks.

The brothers also are writing an English-language remake of Dutch director Dany Deprez's family comedy, "Science Fiction," for Sony and the Donners' Co.

1492 is producing Marvel Comics' "Fantastic Four" for 20th Century Fox and a feature adaptation of Broadway musical "Rent" for Revolution Studios, with Columbus directing.
