Skedded to hit shelves in fall 2006, the book will include anecdotes from Newhart's life and career, as well thoughts and observations on various other topics.
Newhart said he will aim to give advice to other comics about showbiz.
Comedian-actor said he had been approached to do books in the past -- including a volume on what it meant to be a grandfather -- but passed until now.
"I always felt that there were maybe some things you could pass on to other comics," he said. "Anecdotes and things over the years that have happened, and moving from standup to comedy recordings to film and to TV. I thought now was the time."
Hyperion editor-in-chief Will Schwalbe said he is hoping this will be one of a number of books Newhart pens for the imprint.
Since 1962, Newhart has appeared in 14 features, including "In and Out," "Catch-22" and "Elf." He's also had two hit long-running hit TV series, "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Newhart."
A standup DVD, of the comic recently performing bits from his first two albums, is in the works.
Newhart was repped in the book deal by Endeavor and manager Joseph Bongiovi.
