Indie shingle Strand Releasing has picked up North American rights to "Tony Takitani," set to make its Stateside debut at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday.
Pic follows the titular lonely illustrator, who becomes involved with a beautiful young woman with an uncontrollable urge to collect expensive clothing.
"Tony" is based on the story by writer Haruki Murakami.
Japanese filmmaker Jun Ichikawa helmed "Tony," which stars Issey Ogata and Miyazawa Rie in dual roles. Ishida Motoki produced. Ryuichi Sakamoto scored the pic, which Strand will roll out this spring.
Pact was brokered by sales banner Celluloid Dreams' Charlotte Mickie and Strand's co-prexys Jon Gerrans and Marcus Hu.
Strand's upcoming slate also includes Fatih Akin's "Head-On" and "tropical Malady," another pic bought through Celluloid.
