Kusturica
PARIS -- Two-time Palme d'Or winner Emir Kusturica will head the jury at the 58th Cannes Film Festival. Fest runs May 11-22.
The Bosnia-born helmer's freewheeling cinematic style features barely controlled (if skillfully lensed) chaos and bickering, so he may be the perfect choice to take command over his still-to-be-announced fellow jurors.
Kusturica drew the Palme d'Or in 1985 for "When Father Was Away on Business," his account of hardship in 1950s Sarajevo. Strife in his fractured homeland was also the inspiration for "Underground," which took top honors at Cannes in 1995.
In addition, his pic "Time of the Gypsies" played Cannes in 1988, and "Life Is a Miracle" was part of the Official Selection last May.
Kusturica is familiar to international arthouse patrons for his perf as the gruff but congenial condemned man in Patrice Leconte's "The Widow of St. Pierre."
