The San Francisco Bay Area punk band's "American Idiot" (Reprise), for the second week in a row was the only album to sell more than 100,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Disc sold just over the 100,000 mark to easily top Eminem's "Encore" (Interscope), which sold 84,000 in the week ended Sunday. Green Day's latest disc has topped 2 million in sales.
Top 50 saw only one debut, Capitol's R&B-dominated soundtrack to Paramount's "Coach Carter," which sold 29,000 units. Another soundtrack, "The Phantom of the Opera" (Sony Classical), was one of only four titles to post a gain from the previous week. It moved 37,000 units to rise 10 spots to No. 20. "Elektra: The Album" (Wind-Up) debuted at No. 62, selling 14,000 in its first week.
Shania Twain's "Greatest Hits" also saw a boost -- 5,000 units -- to 74,000, moving her compilation to No. 3. Toby Keith's second volume of hits and Celine Dion's "Miracle" also had sales spikes.
Among the albums crossing sales thresholds were Ludacris' "Red Light District" (Def Jam), which sold 55,000 to move past a cume of 1 million; Keith's "Greatest Hits Vol. 2" sold 52,000 to surpass 2 million; Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company" (Concord/hear Music) passed 2 million on sales of 34,000; and Gretchen Wilson's "Here for the Party" (Epic) sold 33,000 to top 3 million.
