No budget has been announced, but the movie will be on a smaller scale than Minghella's last two films for Miramax, "Cold Mountain" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
Currently casting, the film will start production in April. Ensemble drama follows contemporary Londoners from a variety of ethnic and class backgrounds whose lives intersect in the seedy inner-city area of Kings Cross.
Title reportedly refers to the film's central theme of theft, both criminal and emotional.
Minghella and partner Sydney Pollack will produce via their Mirage Enterprises, which struck a three-year producing agreement with Miramax at the start of 2004.
"We're pleased and excited that the first project under Mirage's new production deal with Miramax will be Anthony's film," Pollack said. Colin Vaines, U.K.-based exec VP of European production and development, will oversee "Breaking and Entering" for Miramax. Tim Bricknell will oversee for Mirage.
Eric Roth, senior VP of business and legal affairs, and former Miramax exec Steve Hutensky negotiated the agreement on behalf of Miramax.
Minghella is still working on his previously announced adaptation of Liz Jensen's novel "The Ninth Life of Louis Drax" for Miramax. He plans to shoot that pic toward the end of this year.
