New Line Cinema has purchased a pitch, "The Optimist," for Seann William Scott to star in and produce.

Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein will write the "Optimist" script, which centers on a man who's born without the gene for unhappiness. His perspective changes when he falls in love with a cynical reporter.

Supervising execs are Kent Alterman, Keith Goldberg and Michele Weiss. Scott and his Identity Films partner, Graham Larson, will produce.

Scott is shooting "The Dukes of Hazzard" for Warner Bros. opposite Johnny Knoxville and Jessica Simpson. He most recently starred opposite the Rock in "The Rundown."

Oakley and Weinstein's credits include "The Simpsons."
