Oz B.O. hits record again

'Shrek 2' year's top grosser

SYDNEY-- The Australian B.O. surpassed $A900 million ($675 million) for the first time ever in 2004.

Industrywide grosses improved by 4.78% to $680.3 million, according to prelim stats compiled by the Motion Picture Distributors Assn. of Australia.

That means the Aussie market has grown for four straight years after a dip in 2000 caused by the Sydney Olympics and the introduction of a goods and services tax on tickets.

The number of screens last year rose slightly to 1,910. Factoring out increases in ticket prices, distribs figure admissions were up by 2%-3%.

"Shrek 2" was the year's top grosser, notching $37.7 million.
