GE scholarship honors Brokaw

Program will provide $15k in college aid

The GE Foundation is establishing the Great Generation Scholarship Program in honor of Tom Brokaw, earmarking $2 million in scholarships for disadvantaged New York City students who show a commitment to community.

Brokaw, who retired as the anchor of NBC's "Nightly News" on Dec. 1, said he and his wife, Meredith, have long been supportive of New York's school system and that he was honored by the scholarship.

Program will provide a $15,000 college scholarship to each recipient, a $2,500 grant for a specific program in which a student is involved and a $2,500 grant for the high school the student attends.

Scholarship is named after Brokaw's bestselling book about the generation of men and women who came of age during WWII and went on to transform America.

The GE Foundation is the philanthropic arm of NBC Universal parent company General Electric.
