Docmakers get Courage

Award ceremonies will be held Dec. 10 at the DGA

The Intl. Documentary Assn. will present Jonathan Stack and James Brabazon with its Courage Under Fire Award for their film "Liberia: An Uncivil War," produced for the Discovery Times Channel.

Michael Moore will present the kudos during the 20th annual IDA Distinguished Documentary Achievement Award ceremonies Dec. 10 at the DGA. Tribute has been presented once before: Saira Shah and James Miller received it in 2001 for their documentary "Beneath the Veil," filmed in Afghanistan.

"Liberia: An Uncivil War" follows a rebel army of indigenous Liberians intent on overthrowing the government of then-President Charles Taylor. Stack, Brabazon and cinematographer Tim Hetherington traveled to Liberia in the summer of 2003, when a battle for control of the country raged for 10 weeks.

"It is fitting that during times of national and international crisis, we single out those documentarians who distinguish themselves by the pursuit of truth in the face of extraordinary danger," said IDA exec director Sandra Ruch.

Stack is a two-time Oscar nominee and an Emmy winner who has produced more than 75 films, including "The Farm: Angola, USA," "The Wildest Show in the South: The Angola Prison Rodeo," "Final Judgment: The Execution of Antonio James," "Damned in the USA, Harlem Diary: Nine Voices of Resilience" and "After 9/11: Rebuilding Lives."

Brabazon is a photojournalist who has pursued stories in more than 50 countries, including Afghanistan, China, Ecuador, Eritrea, Kashmir, Kosovo, Israel, Russia, Zimbabwe and Northern Ireland.

"Liberia: An Uncivil War" was recently granted the Special Jury Award at the Intl. Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam.
