Exec ups her slice of Pi
New chief for Spanish world's top film sales co
Pi's former sales director, Gonard replaces Pepe Huerta, who has ankled to return to TV research company Geca Consultores as its general manager.
"We'll continue with the same strategy which we've followed from our launch three years ago, since it's yielded good results, though we'll be looking to hike our presence in specific markets such as Asia and to increase new technology distribution," Gonard told Daily Variety.
Pi has just acquired international distribution rights to the romantic fable "Fragil," the long-awaited new feature from Basque helmer Juanma Bajo Ulloa ("Airbag," "The Dead Mother," "Butterfly Wings").
Narrated in the style of a contempo fairytale, "Fragil" (Fragile) - which shouldn't be confused with the Jaume Balaguero's Cal-ista Flockhart-starrer "Fragile" - is a love story turning on a normal-looking girl, Venus, who falls for a Hollywood star. The two live a hardly fairy-tale love affair.
Produced by Bajo Ulloa's prodcos Fragil Zinema and Gasteizko Zinema, the $1.7 million pic has been shot in English and Spanish. It will be shown at a special screening during the 37th Sitges Intl. Film Festival of Catalonia, which opens Dec. 2.
Pi has also sold Manuel Gomez Pereira's romantic comedy "Cosas que hacen que la vida valga la pena" (Things That Make Life Worth Living) to Italy (AB Films) and Mexico (Quality Films). Last year, the same buyers bought sapphic comedy "My Mother Likes Women," toplining Leonor Watling.
Formed by Spanish production houses BocaBoca, Globomedia, Cartel and Video Mercury Films, the Pi Group was launched in March 2002.
