Newport will honor Noyce with Pell lifetime film nod

Honor to be bestowed Dec. 11

Aussie auteur Phillip Noyce ("The Quiet American") has been tapped to receive the Claiborne Pell Award for lifetime achievement in filmmaking at an upcoming gala thrown by the Newport Film Festival and Rhode Island Film and Television Office.

Honor will be bestowed Dec. 11 at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport, R.I., followed by a reception at the area's historic Gray Craig Estate.

Celebration for Noyce will include a screening of his 1978 feature "Newsfront."

Noyce's credits include "Dead Calm," "Patriot Games," "Rabbit-Proof Fence" and "The Bone Collector."

The eighth annual Newport fest is slated to run June 7-12.
