"Mad Maria," the name that U.S. engineers gave the first locomotive to operate on the railway, will air 35-episodes from Jan. 25 to March 25.
Director Ricardo Waddington, stars Ana Paula Arosio and Fabio Assuncao, and 450 colleagues are lensing in Rondonia state in the Amazon rainforest, facing the hardships that workers encountered during the railway's construction. These include the risk of malaria, extreme heat and the "tucandeiras," large ants that bite.
Yale-graduate engineer Farquhar was the VP of the Atlantic Coast Electric Railway Co. and the Staten Island Electric Railway Co. and ran companies in Cuba and Guatemala. In 1907, he founded the Madeira-Mamore Railway Co. and began building the railway linking the border of Brazil and Bolivia to a port in the Amazon River.
