Argentina's National Film Institute (Incaa) is building a 50-seat theater on Jubany Base, an Argentine-German research station on the 25 de Mayo/King George Island at the northern tip of the Antarctica Peninsula.
Initially, the cinema will show 24 Argentinian films with English subtitles in DVD format.
While only 14 people live at the settlement in winter, residency surges to 100 biologists and geologists during the warmer months of September to April. Hundreds more work in the nearby research stations of Brazil, Chile, China, Poland, Uruguay, Russia and South Korea.
Cinema will be the newest opened for Incaa, a state department that finances and regulates the national film industry.
It has opened 20 in the past few years at home and in Madrid, New York and Paris to bolster the exhibition of homegrown pics.
