Inside Move: Eustis near to Public role

Announcement to be made after Election Day

After Doug Hughes' departure as a candidate, Trinity Rep's Oskar Eustis moves to the front of the line to replace George C. Wolfe as producer of the Public Theater, sources close to the legit company report.

An announcement on the position is expected to be made right after Election Day.

If the Eustis assignment unravels in the final stages of negotiation, it won't be his first time on the nonprofit job merry-go-round.

Three years ago, he turned down an offer to be dean of the Yale School of Drama and the Yale Repertory Theater. More recently, he was reported to be a finalist for Gordon Davidson's job at the Mark Taper/Center Theater Group. Michael Ritchie will fill the artistic-director position there.

In 1994, Eustis took over as artistic director of Trinity Rep in Providence, R.I. Previously, he had been associate artistic director of the Mark Taper Forum and, before that, artistic director at the Eureka Theater in San Francisco. At the Eureka, he was an early supporter of Tony Kushner, co-writing the NEA grant that commissioned "Angels in America." Eustis directed early workshops of the epic piece and staged its world premiere at the Taper in 1992.

George C. Wolfe went on to helm the Broadway production of "Angels."

If Eustis becomes producer of the Public, he would be expected to continue that theater's long-held tradition of multiculturalism. World premieres he has directed include Philip Kan Gotanda's "Day Standing on Its Head" at MTC; David Henry Hwang's "Bondage" and Suzan-Lori Parks' "Devotees in the Garden of Love" at Actors Theater of Louisville; and Eduardo Machado's "Floating Islands" at Mark Taper Forum.
