Known as the Shuberts, Gerald Schoenfeld and the late Bernard B. Jacobs will have adjacent Broadway theaters on West 45th Street renamed in their honor.
The board of directors of the Shubert Organization, owner of 17 Broadway venues, announced that in the spring the Plymouth Theater (236 W. 45th St.) will become the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. Next door, the Royale Theater (242 W. 45th) will be renamed the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater. The dedication ceremony is scheduled to take place in Shubert Alley.
Schoenfeld has been chair of the Shubert Org since 1972. Jacobs was president of the company from 1972 until his death in 1996.
The Plymouth and the Royale date from 1917 and 1927, respectively, and have housed such historic productions as "Diamond Lil," "The Front Page," "The Glass Menagerie," "The Caine Mutiny" and "The Odd Couple."
Last year, Jujamcyn Theaters changed the name of the Martin Beck Theater to the Al Hirschfeld Theater.
