Keita's 'River' flows again

The French-language film gets a makeover

Mama Keita will direct an English-language version of his film "Le Fleuve" (The River), with a script penned by Kim Watson.

In "The River," a young street hustler commits a brutal murder and flees Brooklyn for Jamaica. There, a young prostitute thrusts him into an unfamiliar world where he finds love but can't escape his violent past.

David Piperni, Sherry Simpson and Judith Zarin will produce "The River" on location in Brooklyn and Jamaica. They plan to begin production on the equity-financed project next spring.

Watson co-wrote "Honey" and is currently co-penning "Car Show" with Alonzo Brown for MTV Films.

Zarin's credits include serving as co-exec producer on "Lovely & Amazing" and "Chuck & Buck." Simpson produced the docu "Amandla."

The French version of "The River" won the Critics Award at the Festival of Paris and was featured at the Tribeca Film Festival.
