Thesp Garners SAG nod

'Notebook' star served three times on guild's board

James Garner will receive the Screen Actors Guild's life achievement award at its kudocast on Feb. 5.

Honor is presented annually to an actor who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession."

Garner is a three-time SAG award nominee, as well as an Academy Award nominee ("Murphy's Romance") and two-time Emmy Award recipient.

Garner joined the board of Screen Actors Guild in 1960 while starring in "Maverick" and was welcomed to his first board meeting by then Guild President Reagan. During three terms on the board, Garner served on the union's television negotiating committee and was twice elected second vice president.

Most recently, Garner starred opposite Gena Rowlands in New Line's sleeper hit "The Notebook," and this fall he returns to ABC skein "8 Simple Rules."
