The comedy will poke fun at the multitude of superhero films, from "Spider-Man" to next summer's "Batman Begins" and "Fantastic Four." Mazin will script, Zucker will direct and Weiss is producing. All three brainstorm the jokes that go into the films.
The deal comes even as the trio toils on "Scary Movie 4," which has been a Dimension priority since the franchise was revived with the third installment, a $110 million grosser that parodied such films as "Signs," "The Matrix," "The Ring" and "8 Mile."
The first two "Scary Movie" films were done by Keenen Ivory Wayans and his brothers Shawn and Marlon. They left to take a rich multipicture deal at Revolution that was to kick off with a spoof of sci-fi films. Dimension quickly assembled its "Scary Movie 3" team and beat them to the marketplace, and the rival project was scratched.
While Zucker, Mazin and Weiss were waiting for the release of films like "The Ring 2" to use as comedy fodder for "Scary Movie 4," they hit upon the idea of a superhero spoof.
Dimension Films co-chairman Bob Weinstein and co-presidents Brad Weston and Andrew Rona signed them to work on both scripts at the same time. It is considered likely that "Superhero!" will go into production next spring, with "Scary Movie 4" to follow.
"When you write these films, you have to watch every movie that came out, and we realized the superhero genre was really ripe," Zucker said.
"There are definite similarities between 'X-Men,' 'Spider-Man,' 'Batman' and the rest of them, about eight beats that are common to all the stories. You follow that main road, add a few more movies into the mix, and hopefully you end up with a kind of original funny movie and not just a grab-bag of jokes."
