Leon's 'Princesses' lenses
'Mondays in the Sun' director starts new pic
Leon's fourth fiction film, entitled "Princesas" (Princesses), the pic marks a return for Leon from the northern shipyards of "Mondays" to the sprawling working class suburbs of Madrid, the setting of Leon's second movie, "Neighborhood."
Toplining Spaniard Candela Pena and Puerto Rican Micaela Nevarez, "Princesses" turns on the lives of two prostitutes. But its real subject, says Leon, is friendship.
"The film's about discoveries, of oneself in another person, and of friendship as a refuge for two people who don't have easy lives," he said.
Sogepaq via Warner Sogefilms - a venture between Warner Bros and Sogecable - has taken theatrical rights to Spain, and Warner Home Video DVD/VHS rights in Spain.
Written by Leon and produced by Leon's own banner Reposado Producciones and Barcelona-based Mediapro, "Princesses" wraps in November.
Spain's 2003 best pic Goya winner, "Mondays" confirmed that there's a substantial audience in Spain for a select number of upscale local pics tackling social issues, such as the psychological effects of unemployment in "Mondays." Pic grossed $ E9.8 million ($12.2 million) in Spain.
