Franklin nests with D'Works on 'Big'

Obmascik to adapt book about rival bird-watchers

Howard Franklin has been hired to write "The Big Year," a comedy being produced by Red Hour and Deuce Three Prod. at DreamWorks.

Pic, an adaptation of the nonfiction book by Mark Obmascik, is about three rival bird-watchers who brave hazardous weather, competitor tactics and unhappy spouses to win the North American Big Year, an annual bird-watching competition.

Red Hours' Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld, and Deuce Three's Curtis Hanson and Carol Fenelon are producing.

Jeanne Allgood is overseeing the pic for DreamWorks.

Franklin built a relationship at DreamWorks over the past few years by writing back-to-back feature animation projects for the studio, including "Space Monkeys" and an untitled circus project. He is writing "Testify" for New Line, on top of a "Monk"-like detective pilot for USA and David Hoberman, entitled "Edison."
