Book, to be published by Simon & Schuster Oct. 1, is the real story of Jacobs' decision to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in an effort to deal with post-college intellectual decay, impending fatherhood and the fear of never amounting to anything extraordinary.
"I felt that after graduating college, for every day out of college my IQ was sinking," says Jacobs, who will adapt the screenplay. "After a while I knew more about Homer Simpson than Homer the Greek. I felt that something drastic had to be done."
Radar founder Ted Field will produce the pic along with Sonnenfeld. Radar director of creative affairs Jennifer Worley brought the project to Radar and will oversee for the shingle.
Jacobs says his peculiar and arduous quest was partly an effort to redeem his family's name.
"When I was young my father actually tried to read the encyclopedia, but he only made it up to the mid-B's, to Borneo," he says.
Jacobs fils, however, over the course of 15 months, made it all the way to the final entry, Zywiec (a town in south central Poland).
The toughest letter? "S." "It's like Heartbreak Hill in the Boston Marathon."
As for the movie version, it will be a romantic comedy that centers on Jacobs' relationship with his wife, which is tried by Jacobs' obsessive hobby.
Sonnenfeld's upcoming projects include producing and directing the Joan Cusack-Kevin Kline comedy "A New Leaf" for Paramount; and directing the crime caper "Angry White Men" for Warner Bros.
Deal was brokered by ICM.
