NL to distrib ThinkFilm titles
New deal includes hit indie pics 'Express,' 'Camel'
New Line will distribute ThinkFilm's retro rock doc "Festival Express" in a two-disc DVD set on Nov. 2 with 50 additional minutes of previously unseen concert performance footage by Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and others, plus interviews with past and present participants of the concert tour.
Some of the upcoming ThinkFilm projects to be distributed by New Line include "The Story of the Weeping Camel," "The Agronomist" and the recent theatrical release "Bright Young Things."
Earlier this week, ThinkFilm, founded by former Lions Gate vet Jeff Sackman, raised an eight-figure sum in private investments to expand the company and increase its acquisition budget.
Among ThinkFilm's releases thus far have been Gus Van Sant's "Gerry," the Academy Award-nominated "Spellbound," Jodie Foster's "The Dangerous Life of Altar Boys" and "The Gospel of John."
Recent acquisitions include Sundance Grand Prize winner "Primer," Clement Virgo's "Lie With Me" and Jonathan Nossiter's Cannes competition entry "Mondovino."
ThinkFilm also has a label for made-for-DVD movies that will remain separate from the New Line deal, Velocity Home Entertainment, which recently purchased DVD rights to "Battle of the Hockey Gladiators," a live event featuring 32 hockey players who brawl for 90 seconds that had to be postponed recently when police in Canada threatened to throw everyone involved in jail.
