Tix prices fall during GOP confab

B'way fights convention slump

NEW YORK -- Fifteen Broadway shows are offering a special promotion for the four days of the Republican National Convention, League of American Theaters and Producers prexy Jed Bernstein announced at a press conference in Duffy Square Thursday.

Theatergoers who buy a full-price ticket for any perf Aug. 30 through Sept. 2 can get a second ticket for just $20.04.

Participants even include heavyweights "The Producers," "Mamma Mia!" and "Hairspray."

Broadway B.O. is expected to struggle during the frame. Biz dropped 3.6% during the Democratic convention in Gotham from July 13-19, 1992.

Promo is attempting to counter "this buzz that happens about 'Oh, it's going to be hard to get into the city, it's going to be crowded,' " said Tim Tompkins, prexy of Times Square Alliance, the business development org partnering on the promo with the League and NYC & Co., the tourism arm of the Mayor's Office.

Convention delegates are already getting free tickets to special Sunday night perfs on Aug. 29, and the promo is an attempt to share the wealth with visiting protesters and Gotham natives.
