ASC lauds Koenekamp's lifetime achievement

Org to present kudos in February

The American Society of Cinematographers has tapped Oscar winner Fred Koenekamp to receive its lifetime achievement award.

Kudos, announced Tuesday at a luncheon at the ASC clubhouse, will be presented at the 19th annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards on Feb. 20 at the Century Plaza Hotel.

Koenekamp has more than 90 production credits, beginning in 1964 with "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." TV series, for which he earned two Emmy nominations. He shared a 1974 Academy Award with Joseph Biroc for "The Towering Inferno," with Koenekamp shooting the dramatic scenes and Biroc handling action sequences.

Koenekamp also received Oscar noms for "Islands in the Stream" and "Patton." Other credits include "The Great Bank Robbery," "Billy Jack," "Kansas City Bomber," "The Amityville Horror," "Papillon" and "Fun With Dick and Jane."

"Fred Koenekamp was in the front ranks of a new wave of cinematographers who entered the industry and enriched the art of visual storytelling during the 1960s and 1970s," said ASC prexy Richard Crudo.

Koenekamp is the son of Hans Koenekamp, who began as a cinematographer at Mack Sennett Studios in 1913, shot Charlie Chaplin and Keystone Kop serials and earned a string of feature credits before shifting to visual effects.

Hans Koenekamp received the ASC Presidents Award in 1991.
