Ash Brannon and Chris Buck are set to co-direct "Surf's Up," Sony Pictures Animation's latest addition to its feature slate.
Chris Jenkins is producing, with surf apparel giant Quiksilver on board to serve as a creative consultant.
The CGI pic will be a clever riff on the cult-surfing film "Endless Summer" with one catch -- it stars penguins.
Pic will be a mockumentary based on the groundbreaking revelation that surfing was actually invented by penguins. In it, a docu crew will take audiences behind the scenes of the most competitive, heartbreaking and dangerous display of surfing known: the Penguin World Surfing Championship.
Quiksilver's Danny Kwock and Matt Jacobson will consult on behalf of the company's Quiksilver Entertainment arm.
Brannon co-developed and co-directed "Toy Story 2" for Disney/Pixar, where he was a story artist and director. Previously, he was an animator and story artist at Warner Bros. Animation.
Buck made his feature directing debut on Disney's "Tarzan" and was a supervising animator on Disney's "Pocahontas."
Jenkins was the artistic coordinator on Disney's "Atlantis" and head of effects animation on Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."
"Surf's Up" is the second feature announced by SPA, which is headed by exec veeps Penney Finkelman Cox and Sandra Rabins, who launched the division in 2002, and overseen by Yair Landau, vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The first film is "Open Season," based on the work of cartoonist Steve Moore. Featuring the voices of Martin Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher and Debra Messing, this pic will be released in 2006.
