McKellen joins a voice cast that includes Robbie Williams, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone, Kylie Minogue and Bill Nighy.
The CGI movie is scheduled for U.K. release in February.
The original TV series was created in the late 1960s by Frenchman Serge Danot and then adapted into English by Eric Thompson and aired on BBC1.
