Deal comes after Murro and the studio exchanged vows on "The Ring 2," then called it off because of creative differences.
Murro continued his blurb work --his latest is the "Whole World" Adidas sneaker spot, in which a swarm of people leap atop the back of Minnesota Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett. But the Israeli-born director took to heart a challenge by DreamWorks' Walter Parkes to find another project.
He reached into his own pocket and bought the novel by "Generation X" author Coupland. Parkes liked the package, paid Murro back his money and made him the film's producer as well. Poirier takes the job after recently scripting "Smart People" for Focus Features.
The Coupland book chronicles the Florida reunion of the ultimate dysfunctional family, who gather to see the clan's sole productive family member, an astronaut, fly into space.
Murro said he found the premise amusing and the outcome strangely touching.
"You grow up thinking astronauts are perfect after being raised in ideal families, and then you meet this group," Murro said. "The book is a bit excessive and needs to be pared down, but there is a very original family dynamic, many revelations and a ticking clock that goes beyond the space launch countdown.
"I've waited a long time to make my first film and wanted to do it right, but when the studio put me on a quest, I moved as quickly as I could."
Parkes said the new material better suits the director.
"When you look at Noam's commercial work, you see more than great technique and comic timing," he said. "In 30-second spots, he communicates a completely original, skewed vision of modern life. I can't think of a better piece of material to showcase Noam's talents."
