The scripting team of Laurence Malkin and Chad Thumann are writing the pic, based on a story by Ron Malfi. Michel Shane and Anthony Romano of Romano/Shane Prods. put the project together with Malfi and are attached to exec produce.
Plot, set in the post-9/11 world of supposed interagency cooperation, revolves around a high-ranking Secret Service agent who defies the FBI by harassing one of its informants with a professional interdepartmental investigation that quickly grows into a personal hatred that could cost the agent his life.
The brothers are aiming to evoke the feel of 1970s-style thrillers such as "The French Connection," "Three Days of the Condor" and "The Parallax View." "We think that those kind of character-oriented films were effective partly because they reflected the kind of creeping darkness of those times," Joe Russo said.
Alicia Allain shepherded the project at Evans; VP Pam Abdy bought the pitch for Paramount.
Nommed for 'Arrested'
The Russos were recently Emmy nominated for the pilot of "Arrested Development," which has been picked up for a second season on Fox.
They also wrote and directed "Welcome to Collinwood" for Section 8 and Warner Bros.; the pilot for FX's "Lucky"; and the pilot for "LAX," which has been up to premiere as an NBC series this fall. The Russos are co-producers on "LAX" and are directing multiple episodes.
Malkin and Thumann recently sold the pitch "Beltway" with Nick Cannon attached to star for Miramax and are writing the remake of "The Anderson Tapes" for Sony and producer Laurence Mark.
Shane and Romano were exec producers on "Catch Me if You Can" and "I Robot."
